This is a song I wrote in honor of nurses, doctors, and all caregivers--especially those who cared for my Mother in the last months of her life. The loosely knit recording was made in Rochester, New York with family while our family was visiting her at the assisted living facility. We were lucky they let us visit her while she was on hospice care; because of COVID they were not letting anyone else in to visit their elders.

there's a man in charge of the show
telling us our troubles will end
toothless talk and a ruthless foe
in a war no words can win

there's a woman in the trenches
working the nightmare shift
she's only asking for protection
protection that words can't give

she's holding hands with heaven
she's got no time to pray
days and nights full of souls she's saving
one foot in hell; she can't walk away

she steps out in the hallway
gazes up at the exit sign
tears falling in the stairwell
she calls home to sing a lullaby

is this that mighty stream
behold the brand new day

she can't hear the tambourines
all she hears is the song of sirens
and the hissing of machines
